If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the southern part of Spain we recommend you to push your luck and visit for 3 days one of the main attractions on northern Africa: Tangier. It is situated at just 32 kilometers from Spain but it is a very different cultural and spiritual experience. Although very close, you may see the sea shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is very different, as part of Morocco, a very exotic and interesting combination of African and European heritage. It is a melting pot where different religions, traditions, habits live together and enhance each other in a very inspiring way. You may leave Europe and reach Africa by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras port every two hours.
Tangier being a relatively compact you may easily get around walking. This way you may see event the obscured and not that advertised parts of it. The main touristic attractions are the Medina, the American Legation, Place de France, the Kashbah.

Besides the geographical and architectural reasons you have to visit Tangier because it is a very strange religious community. It is a place that brings together the three monotheist religions. Muslims, Christians and Jewish live in equilibrium and each of them show the best results of their cultural heritages. This multicultural character seemed appealing to writers as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, George Orwell. Painters as Delacroix and Henry Matisse found that this region’s picturesque is worth being painted.
And as a rather prosaic reason for visiting Tangier: you may purchase one of the most beautiful and exquisite pair of sandals, traditional clothing, silver jewelries or wooden handicrafts.
